Jie. Limitation brings progress and attainment. If the limits imposed are severe and bitter, they cannot endure.

Water over the lake. Jie. The centered one establishes measures of number and proportion, and reflects on virtue and conduct.

Classical (Legge)(The trigram representing) a body of water and (that representing) water again over it form Kieh. The superior man, in accordance with this, constructs his (methods of) numbering and measurement, and discusses (points of) virtue and conduct.

He does not leave the courtyard before his door. There will be no error.

Nine in the second place

He does not leave the courtyard inside his gate. There will be misfortune.

Six in the third place

Without observing proper limits, he will have occasion to lament. There will be no one to blame but himself.

Classical (Legge)In the (negligence of) observing his (proper) regulations, he will have occasion to bewail and lament. But there will be no one to blame (but himself).

Six in the fourth place

He is quietly and naturally attentive to all limits. Progress and success.

Nine in the fifth place

Sweet and acceptable limits. Good fortune. Going forward, he will be praised.

The limits are severe and bitter. Even with firm and correct there will be misfortune. Yet occasion for regret will in time disappear.
